Services

Common Facilities support the work of all the research groups in the unit by offering four main services:

– A media kitchen service including sterilization and preparation of solutions
– The provision of common tools for bacteriology and molecular biology
– Regular testing of cell cultures
– The development of histology, in situ hybridization and immunofluorescence services

MEDIA KITCHEN SERVICE

Besides the washing and sterilization of glassware, this service ensures continuous provision of common materials and sterile solutions to all the research groups in the unit.

  • Washing, sterilization and distribution of laboratory glassware and common materials
  • Sterilization and distribution of common plastic consumables
  • Preparation of buffer solutions (PBS, LB, SOC)

BACTERIOLOGY AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY SERVICES

  • Preparation of solid and liquid media for bacteria cultures (LB Ampi, LB Kana and plain LB)
  • Preparation of electrocompetent and chemically competent bacteria
  • Preparation of antibiotic samples (kanamycin and ampicillin)
  • Plasmid extraction (Maxiprep)

REGULAR TESTING OF MAMMALIAN CELL CULTURES

  • Monthly tests, planed or requested, for PCR-based detection of mycoplasma contamination in cell cultures grown in all 4 cell culture rooms

HISTOLOGY, IN SITU HYBRIDIZATION AND IMMUNOFLUORESCENCE SERVICES (H2I2S)

This service aims at developing and providing the following techniques:

Assistance in the preparation of murine tissue sections by different methods:

  • Dissection, preparation and fixation of mouse tissues (including embryo tissues)
  • Vibratome sectioning
  • Cryostat sectioning

Assistance in histology experiments and gene expression analyses (RNAs and proteins):

  • Tissue staining on sections (e.g.: Nissl)
  • In Situ Hybridization on Cryostat sections (free-floating or slide-mounted)
  • Immunofluorescence on tissue sections
